Think of it this way. XHTML has been trained in the acting business. He knows how to memorize lines and read a script. But Hollywood places such a huge amount of importance on how things look, XHTML wouldn't get any parts because he's so plain.
Now, CSS has been trained in makeovers and creating. Beauty. These two people have been trained in two entirely different things, but in order for them to get to where they need to be, they need to work together. CSS can't make pretty things without a subject to work on.
So CSS comes along and makes XHTML look like a movie star, and bam, he's got the part. Because he knows all the rules and and what to do and what to say, and CSS knows how to make plainness into something extra ordinary, they can both work in Hollywood.
Okay, so maybe that was a kind of far fetched example. But nobody ever changed the world by being rational. So there you have it, the diffrence between XHTML and CSS
