- Students like Web Design because they get to create good looking websites.
- "Using filezilla." - We will be having another unit this quarter on FTP and Filezilla.
- "The forced forums." - I know you probably hate them, but trust me, they are extremely helpful!
- "When I looked at professional sites, they never used techniques like slicing, which makes me feel like what I have been learning is outdated." - Unfortunately, in the state standards that my courses are aligned to, I have to teach students how to edit and slice images for web content. This quarter we will go more in depth with advanced CSS and XHTML so you don't have to do as much slicing.
- Favorite assignments:
-Blogs
-Pixlr Banners
-Slicing
-Principles of Design Project
-Travel Destination Website
-Graphics editing
-JavaScript
- Website Wednesdays feedback: Most of you like it and thought it was a good idea. Some of you were even able to raise your grade from doing the extra credit. A few of you said that you were not informed so I will try to send reminders to check it out in my emails to the class.
- Twitter ideas - love these ideas for things I can tweet in the future:
-Reminders
-Shout outs
-Good websites/blogs/resources
-Fun facts about coding
-Cool websites
-Details about the lesson for the week
-Class announcements
- "I liked it much better when you did more of the tutorials. The aid is nice but I think you do a better job at explaining it. With her videos I sometimes get lost." - Based off of the feedback from last quarter, a lot of students said that they wanted to have more practice making websites, so I actually added in 2 website projects during the second half of quarter 3, which is probably why the videos may seem choppy. Next year, I will refine these lessons and videos even more so they make more sense. Thanks for being patient with us. We are trying our best to make this class as fun and instructional as we can! :)
- The free javascript stuff is terrible -- over 95% of them gave me validation problems that I couldn't fix, which made it that much more time consuming. So we need help with that!" - I totally agree with you. I am looking into better websites with free code that we can use. So sorry about the messy code!
- "Give more meaning to the show off wall if keeping it like just one point on an assignment or something like that or lessen the people and give larger rewards." - Excellent idea! I will think of some sort of reward if students make it on there. Let me know if you have any suggestions for rewards.
- Possible assignment suggestions - these are great!
-More free-will assignments with guidelines to follow.
-More websites where we get creative reign -- I love making websites my kind of pretty!
-GIMP instead of Pixlr.
-I think that a pure graphic design unit would be cool
-Notepad++ (features great syntax highlighting and code completion)
-I think more optional reading and videos would be cool to see since if you do peak a interest into the subject then you can take a look at the optional things since school is meant to help you develop your interests.
Wow, I love reading all of your course feedback - it's always very informative and positive, which makes it so much easier for me to improve my teaching and curriculum each quarter. I'm ecstatic to hear that you are really enjoying the class. Please do not ever hesitate to come to me if you ever need help or even if you want to chat for a bit about anything random ;). I absolutely love teaching this class and I have such a stellar group of students this year and I can already see lots of Web Designers in the making. Thank you for a great quarter and I'm looking forward to the next.
Much love,
Ms. H
